2025 KCAC Indoor Track & Field Championships Preview
by Carol R Swenson, Meet Announcer
The 14th edition of the KCAC Indoor Track & Field Championships will return to Omaha, Neb. for a second consecutive year, this time for a Friday-Saturday competition on the 200-meter flat track of the Lied Fitness Center Fieldhouse on the campus of the College of Saint Mary.
The 2024 Championships saw Friends University win their first men’s title since 2021, while the University of Saint Mary women won their second straight team title. In addition to a new championship venue in Omaha, 2024 welcomed Evangel University into the KCAC and saw the Valor women finish second and the men fourth in the team championship races.
The 2025 meet will see action get underway at 2:30 p.m. on Friday with the Pole Vault, Long Jump and Shot Put for both men and women. Track events on Friday are scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. with the preliminaries of the 60-meter Hurdles followed by the preliminaries of the 60-meter Dash. The first finals on the track are scheduled 6:15 p.m. with the 5,000-meter Runs for both women and men, followed by the 4x800m Relays. Friday’s competition will wrap up with the preliminaries in the 200-meter Dashes scheduled for 7:55 p.m.
Saturday’s action will begin at 10:00 a.m. with the Weight Throw, Triple Jump and High Jump. All events on the track on Saturday, scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m., will be finals only. Action will wrap up with the women’s and then men’s 4x400m Relays at approximately 5:00 p.m. The 2025 KCAC Indoor Track & Field Championships will wrap up at approximately 5:20 p.m. with the team awards along with recognition for the meet’s outstanding athletes and coaches’ awards.
The women’s competition will be headlined by the possible return of four multiple-winners from last season: Delaney Weimer (Evangel, 60m & 200m); Reagan Hiebert (Saint Mary, 3,000m & 5,000m); April Phillips (Evangel, High Jump, Long Jump & Triple Jump); and Candice Jones (York, Shot Put & Weight Throw). Reagan Hiebert also won the 1-mile a year ago, but will not compete in that event this time around. JayOnna Perry (Ottawa, 400m [2-time]), Madisyn Ehrlich (Kansas Wesleyan, 1,000m), and Aaliyah Ramirez (Friends, Pole Vault) are also eligible to return and defend their 2024 titles.
On the men’s side, Luis Perez (Saint Mary, 800m & 1,000m) and Mikkel Tarver (Friends, Long Jump and Triple Jump) are the only men eligible to return as two-event defending champions from 2024. Four other men are eligible to return and defend single championships from last season: Domonic Atkinstall (Ottawa, 200m), Tommy Baker (Saint Mary, 1-Mile), Vance Shewey (Tabor, High Jump [2-time]), and Alphonse Jackson (York, Shot Put).
In the battle for the team championships, the University of Saint Mary women appear to be on track for a third straight title as the Spire women are currently ranked #12 nationally by the USTFCCCA, with Evangel ranked #22. In the pre-meet KCAC Indoor poll, the Spires and Valor are predicted to finish ahead of Friends and Kansas Wesleyan. Evangel’s men top the KCAC schools in the USTFCCCA national rankings, currently #23, but surprisingly the Valor men find themselves only ranked #4 in the conference title race poll, trailing favorite Kansas Wesleyan, in addition to Friends and Saint Mary. Still, it comes down to who can fit the necessary pieces together to garner the points necessary for the KCAC title!
