Quijada Earns NAIA-ATA Al Ortolani Athletic Training Scholarship

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Andy Quijada, who is currently pursuing his master's degree in Athletic Training from Sterling College, has earned the NAIA-ATA (NAIA Athletic Trainers Association) Al Ortolani Athletic Training Scholarship, the national office announced Monday. The scholarship is named in honor of the head athletic trainer at Pittsburg State University (1955-1995) and recognizes student-athletes pursuing an entry-level degree in athletic training.

“I first want to say it is not only an honor to receive this scholarship, but it is the first step of advancing in this profession," Quijada remarked. "It reminds me why I wanted to become an athletic trainer in the first place, to be a role model, leader, and a mentor to all those around me. I would also like to thank the NAIA Athletic Trainers Association and the Al Ortolani family for being able to receive this scholarship.”

Andy Quijada’s firsthand experience as a student-athlete fueled his passion for expanding healthcare access within collegiate athletics.

Entering the second year of his master’s program in athletic training at Sterling, Andy approaches his studies with unmatched compassion and humility. Known for his remarkable bedside manner, Andy provides a calm and reassuring presence that student-athletes naturally gravitate toward. Additionally, Andy’s proficiency in English and Spanish has enhanced his ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations, proving essential in creating inclusive and supportive environments where every student-athlete feels seen and heard.

In the first year, Andy gained hands-on experience at both Hutchinson High School and Sterling College, assisting with athletic training needs for football, volleyball, soccer, tennis, cross-country, and baseball. After graduation, Andy aims to leverage his degree to continue supporting and advocating for the needs of NAIA student-athletes.

Director of Athletic Training at Sterling College, Pete Manely, had this to say about Quijada receiving this award: "Andy is more than just 'Andy', a graduate AT student. He is thoughtful, caring, deliberate in his actions and words, and he is dedicated. He is all of these things in the classroom and in the clinical setting. We are so proud of this scholarship recognition for him, he is very deserving. Thank you to the NAIA-ATA and to the Ortolani Family.”

This marks the third consecutive year that a member of the Sterling College Graduate Athletic Training program has earned this award.
