Joseph Gogus Resigns as Bethel College Cheer Coach

NORTH NEWTON, Kan. -  Bethel College Athletics announced June 6 that Head Cheer Coach Joseph Gogus has resigned. Known for his energy, dedication, and behind-the-scenes contributions across the athletic department, Gogus leaves behind a lasting legacy that will be difficult to match.

"Coach Gogus was the unsung hero of our athletic department," said Bethel Athletic Director Tim Swartzendruber. "His willingness to do so many things that were not part of his job description will be sorely missed. I wish him the best in his next endeavor."

Over his career at Bethel, Gogus helped elevate the Thresher cheer program to national prominence. Under his leadership, the team claimed three KCAC team conference championships, a Region 6 Advanced Large Coed Championship, and three NAIA National Championship appearances. The program also tallied five KCAC runner-up finishes, producing 35 All-KCAC athletes and 14 NAIA All-Scholar Athletes.

His impact extended far beyond the mat. Gogus served in several leadership roles, including KCAC Competitive Cheer and Competitive Dance Sport Chair, and as a member of both the NAIA Cheer and Dance Executive Committees and the NAIA Selection Committee. His efforts were recognized with numerous honors, including being named KCAC Coach of the Year three times and a two-time Newton Area Coach of the Year. His teams were also recognized twice as Newton Area Team of the Year.

Known for doing "just about everything" around campus, Gogus was a constant presence at Bethel athletic events—whether managing football gameday music or helping with sound equipment at basketball games. His willingness to jump in wherever needed made him an invaluable member of the Thresher community.

Reflecting on his time at Bethel, Gogus said, "I have loved every minute of being a Thresher and will cherish those memories forever! Roll On!"
