KCAC Alumni Spotlight: Aaron Fletcher, York University

KANSAS - The Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) is proud to bring you the "KCAC Alumni Spotlight" series. Periodically, the conference will aim to highlight an alumnus of one of our KCAC full member institutions. How did your time at York help to prepare you for life after college/entering the workforce?
FLETCHER: "York gave me a foundation that extended well beyond the classroom. As a student-athlete, I learned discipline, time management, and how to perform under pressure. These skills proved invaluable in both graduate-level science and the fast-paced world of biotech investing. Academically, my biochemistry training taught me how to think critically, break down complex problems, and stay curious, which directly shaped my career path as a scientist and ultimately as a venture capitalist. Just as importantly, York instilled a strong sense of purpose, integrity and faith, which continues to guide how I evaluate opportunities, build teams, and invest in innovations that can meaningfully impact patients’ lives."

Were there any pre-professional experiences (internships/job shadows/etc.) during your college years that prepared you for entering your chosen field?
FLETCHER: "The biochemistry professor at York while I was a student was a retired scientist who worked for Gatorade and helped create several of their products. Our Organic Chemistry and Biology professors were both excellent mentors who shared several experiences from their graduate work experience. Lastly, my Track and Cross Country coach was also a business professor who educated me on investing during various athletic trips. The combination of all these various experiences prepared me well for the world of biotech innovation."

What lessons did you learn competing in collegiate athletics that helped prepare you for life after your playing days were over?
FLETCHER: "Collegiate athletics taught me discipline, consistency, and how to perform under pressure. It also reinforced the importance of teamwork, accountability, and working toward a shared goal. Most importantly, my collegiate experience built resilience and taught me how to handle setbacks, adjust, and keep moving forward. Each of these experiences and skills have translated directly into high-stakes professional environments and which continues to shape how I approach challenges in my career today."
