STERLING, Kan. – Sterling College Athletics and Vice President for Athletics, Justin Morris, are pleased to announce that Helen "Gwen" Mikkelsen will take over as the head coach of softball at Sterling College.
"Gwen brings a winning mindset, a deep understanding of the game and a genuine investment in our student-athletes. We are excited to add her to our staff and watch her elevate our softball program and lead with excellence," Morris said.
Mikkelsen started at Sterling College in January of 2026 as the assistant coach for softball, and is stepping into the position after filling in as interim head coach in late April. As the assistant she worked to develop players glove work, footwork and hand-eye coordination, specifically in the infield. She has a special passion for developing player's mental approach to the game and building confidence.
"I came to Sterling because I was intrigued by the graduate program Sterling offered and I've always wanted to continue my coaching career," Mikkelsen said. "The idea that I would be able to learn more about coaching while also building a stronger connection with God was something I really looked forward to. Thankfully, I was given that opportunity earlier this year."
Originally from Casa Grande, Ariz., Mikkelsen had a highly decorated career as an infielder at Northwestern College where she graduated with a bachelor's of business management in 2025. During her time at Northwestern, she was a three-time GPAC Conference Champion, the 2023 GPAC player of the year, a four-time all-conference honoree, an NAIA All American and an NFCA All-American.
"Going from a player to a coach, I know what it takes to win with integrity. I've had a lot of great coaches in my life and they have taught me a lot about sacrificing for the team. Serving is what I was called to do as a player and that's my plan as a coach," Mikkelsen said.
Mikkelsen is looking forward to next season and continuing to develop relationships with players and the community of Sterling.
"I am so excited to continue building connections with the players and the Sterling community. I'm grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the academic, athletic and spiritual journey these young women will go through while here at Sterling," she said.
