KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Avila Athletics is proud to announce the hiring of Kyle South as the program’s new head women’s volleyball coach, Athletic Director Shawn Summe announced today.
“We feel fortunate to be able to name Kyle as the leader of our women’s volleyball program,” Summe said “He brings with him a vast volleyball resume with stops at the club, high school, junior college, NAIA and Division I levels, including serving on coaching staffs who have had success in the NCAA Tournament. Kyle has the knowledge of the Kansas City volleyball scene, which is one of the top areas in the country in developing volleyball talent. We are excited to welcome Kyle and his family to Avila!”
With a background in volleyball data and statistical analysis, South has 10 years of experience at the NCAA Division I level, including volunteer positions at UMKC and Creighton and an assistant coaching stop at Oral Roberts. Bringing on- and off-court success and nearly 20 years of volleyball experience at the Division I, NAIA, NJCAA and club levels, South is ready to make his mark at Avila.
“I am so grateful for the opportunity to help Avila grow,” said South. “I want to thank Dr. Andy Jett, Curtis Burton and Shawn Summe for their trust. There is so much potential for this program to be great. I’m excited to get to work with the girls in the gym and start looking for future Eagles in the volleyball community.”
South assisted as the Technical Coordinator at Baylor during the Bears’ 2019 postseason run and at South Carolina, where he helped with the Gamecocks’ statistical collection and film breakdowns while assisting with game preparation.
Before his time at South Carolina, South spent three seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Oral Roberts and spent three years in a volunteer position at Creighton. With the Bluejays, South helped the program win 52 games and go 35-1 in Big East play, including a 2015 NCAA Sweet 16 appearance.
No stranger to NAIA volleyball, South was a graduate assistant for three years at Missouri Valley College, working with both the women’s and men’s programs. He helped the men’s program set school records for wins in back-to-back campaigns. South also recruited the program’s first-ever NAIA volleyball All-American during his time with the Vikings.
South arrives at Avila after a successful two-year stint as the head coach at Tonganoxie High School, where he amassed 39 wins in the western suburbs of Kansas City.
Coming to Avila with five years as a coach and the Men’s Volleyball Director at Dynasty Volleyball Academy in Kansas City, South brings a vast recruiting pipeline to the Eagles.
Also familiar with the Midwest region, South has more than a decade of experience coaching in the state of Iowa, at Iowa Western Community College as well as multiple high school and club programs.
A Manhattan Christian College alumnus, South and his wife, Jill, have three children, Camilla, Wren and Melanie.
